Overall opinion
Explanation
Academic staff is the single most important learning resource available to most
students. It is important that those who teach have a full knowledge and
understanding of the subject they are teaching, have the necessary skills and
experience to communicate their knowledge and understanding effectively to
students in a range of teaching contexts, and can access feedback on their own
performance.
The quality of an institution not only depends on the quality of the programmes but
also the quality of the academic staff. The quality of academic staff encompasses
qualification, subject matter expertise, experience, teaching skills and professional
ethics. The academic staffing covers full-time and part-time professors, lecturers,
and visiting teaching staff. Besides the quality of academic staff, the institution has to
determine the quantity of academic staff required to meet the demands and needs of
the students and the institution. Often full-time equivalent (FTE) and staff-to-student
ratio are used to determine the size of the academic staff.
